    MAY 03 – BISHOP BACKS JUSTICE PLEA FOR MICHAEL

    The Bishop of Liverpool has called on the government to support the Michael Shields fight for justice. In a speech to the House of Lords, Bishop James Jones said there were “genuine concerns” over the safety of the teenager’s conviction for attempted murder in Bulgaria. He said the flawed case against the student could affect Bulgaria’s entry to the EU, deter tourism and hit trade and investment. Read More

    APR 29 – SHIELDS FAMILY DEVASTATED

    The father of Michael Shields said last night he was “devastated” after a Bulgarian court denied Michael a retrial. Shields appealed against his conviction to Bulgaria’s Supreme Court last month and hoped the court would either overturn the conviction or at least grant him a retrial. The court yesterday reduced his sentence from 15 to 10 years but refused to grant a retrial. It also re-imposed a fine of £71,000, which had been reduced to £42,000 at an earlier appeal. Read More

    Apr 28 – MICHAEL SHIELDS SENT HOME

    Michael Shields will serve out the rest of his prison sentence in Britain. Judges in Bulgaria agreed to reduce the teenager’s 15-year prison sentence by five years but refused to order a full re-trial for his conviction of attacking a barman. The Liverpool ECHO understands the 19-year-old will be on British soil within a month to serve out the remaining nine years. Read More

    Apr 28 – SHIELDS’ SENTENCE REDUCED TO 10 YEARS

    Michael Shields’ hopes of a re-trial and the chance to clear his name were dashed today after the Bulgarian court hearing his appeal cut his jail term to 10 years and increased his fine to £71,000. Michael was initially handed a 15-year prison term in July last year after being found guilty of an attack on Bulgarian waiter Martin Georgiev during a stay in the resort of Varna. Read More

    ITV1 are to broadcast a documentary on Tuesday 18th April – The Forgotten Fan: A Tonight Special (21.45-22.30) – in which one of the UK’s most experienced detectives, Peter Coles, former Head of Nottinghamshire Police’s Major Crimes Unit, re-examines the evidence and suggests there were fundamental flaws in the case against Shields.

    Mar 22 – SHIELDS FAMILY HOPEFUL OF RE-TRIAL IN BULGARIA APPEAL

    The father of Michael Shields, jailed for 15 years in Bulgaria for a crime he insists he did not commit, said he was “hopeful” his son would be granted a re-trial. Michael Shields appeared in court in Bulgaria to appeal against his conviction for the attempted murder of a barman in the Black Sea resort of Golden Sands.     Several of Michael Shields’ cousins and friends entered the ‘Free Michael Shields’ team in the Hillsborough Justice Campaign’s annual 5-A-Side football tournament. With 20 teams entered they did very well against some quality opposition, eventually making the 3rd/4th place play-off game, where they sportingly allowed a team of youngsters to stand in for them.     Welcome to Bulgarian visitors. There are those who may suggest that we are trying to interfere with your sovereignty or system of justice. This is not true. This campaign is about two human beings, both of them victims in their own way. Martin Georgiev, who suffered a terrible assault, and Michael Shields, who has suffered a terrible miscarriage of justice.
